Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Candy-filled Halloween Cookies

These candy-stuffed witch cookies may look like they took a spell or two to conjure up, but they’re actually frightfully fun to make! Just follow these spooky-simple steps and you’ll have a coven of cookie cuties in no time.

Step One: Prepare the Dough

  • Set your butter out so it’s soft and ready to mix—witches don’t like cold butter!
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and that softened butter until crumbly.
  • Crack in one egg and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water, then stir or knead until you get a smooth, non-sticky dough.
  • Divide your dough into two parts:
    • Half gets colored green (for those ghoulish little faces).
    • The other half gets colored black or purple (for their wicked hats).

Pro Tip: chilling the dough can help you get better cuts. Optional.

Step Two: Make the Hats + Bottom Cookies

  • Roll out your black/purple dough to around ¼-inch thickness and use a witch hat cookie cutter (or a DIY template) to cut 6 hats.
  • Sprinkle on edible stars, moons, and Halloween sprinkles. Gently press to make sure the glam stays put!
  • Roll out half of your green dough to around ¼ -inch and cut six 2-inch circles.
  • Carefully cut out a little notch at the top of each circle that matches the bottom of the hats – this is where the hat will rest. See image below.
  • Brush a little water on the seams and attach a hat to each green circle—this is now the flat backside of your cookie.

Step Three: Roll and Bake the Faces

  • Roll out the other half of the green dough to about ¼ inch thick and cut six 2½-inch circles.
  • Flip over a silicone half-sphere mold and gently press each circle over a dome shape (this is what gives you those chubby witch faces!).
  • Pop into a preheated oven at 350–360°F and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges just begin to brown.
  • Let them cool completely before assembling.

Step Four: Assemble the Witchy Piñata Cookies

  • Lightly file or sand the edges of the green domes with a fine grater to smooth them out and help them sit flat.
  • Then, following instructions on the package, melt the white chocolate and tint it orange.
  • Fill each dome cookie with the mini candies.
  • Brush or pipe a line of melted chocolate around the rim of the dome cookie, then place the flat green + hat cookie on top to seal the cookies together. Make sure you have it facing the right way!
  • Gently flip the cookies over to reveal their round little faces!

  • Use more chocolate to attach candy eyes and noses (M&Ms, Sixlets, or candy pearls work great).
