Every Halloween table deserves a showstopper, and this one’s ready to cast a spell on your guests! This Halloween Cauldron Cake is dark, dramatic, and downright spooktacular. It looks like something that crawled out of a witch’s kitchen, and it’s ridiculously easy to pull off with a store-bought cake mix and some creative frosting fun.
When I made this Halloween cake for Fun Food Crafts, I wanted a treat that screamed Halloween but didn’t require a potion-level of effort. The secret? Imperfection! That cracked, bumpy, “aged cauldron” look gives off old-world witch vibes and hides every frosting oops in the best way possible.
So grab your wand, or, you know, your spatula, and let’s whip up a cake that’s as fang-tabulous as it is frightfully fun.
Reasons Why You’ll Love This Halloween Cauldron Cake

How to Make a Halloween Cauldron Cake
Ready to stir up some magic? This cauldron cake is equal parts eerie and adorable, with shiny black frosting, a bubbling green “potion,” and the most haunting candy eyeball you’ve ever seen.
🥄 Kitchen Tools You’ll Need to Make a Halloween Cauldron Cake
Grab your goodies and get ready to stir the (sugar) cauldron:
- Wilton 3D Sports Ball Cake Pan
- Half-sphere silicone mold for the 3 legs (I used the middle size)
- Serrated knife (for trimming the cake)
- Offset spatula or butter knife
- Small bowl of hot water (for warming the knife)
- Piping bag or Ziploc
- Cake turner, board or plate for display (I prefer black)
Ingredients You’ll Need to Make a Halloween Cauldron Cake
Here’s your grocery list for spooky success:
- chocolate cake mix
- Black frosting
- Green frosting – or color white frosting with gel food coloring (I prefer Americolor)
- gummy eyeball candy – I found mine at Dollar Tree/Family Dollar
- Green candy pearls (I used the ones linked)
- Bone sprinkles or candy
- Bug sprinkles or candy
- Green edible glitter or sprinkles, optional
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step One: Bake the Cauldron and Legs
Prepare the batter, and grease and flour one half of the cake pan set. Next, fill the ball pan for the cauldron body, but do not fill it all the way to the rim. I stopped filling around a quarter inch below the rim. Then use the remaining batter to fill three cavities of the medium half-sphere mold for the legs.
This Spooky Halloween Spider Cake can easily be made at the same time using both halves of the ball pan! It is so easy to make, it’s scary!

Place the silicon molds on a flat baking sheet and bake both until finished. Keep in mind, these ball pans do take longer to cook than other-shaped cakes. Mine took around 40 to 50 minutes and involved several toothpick insertions. In addition, the legs will likely finish before the cauldron body, so be sure to keep an eye on it.
Once finished, allow the cakes to cool completely.

Step Two: Trim the Cakes
Next, using a serrated knife, trim any excess cake that rose over the rim to create a flat base to sit on. If needed, repeat for the three legs. Mine baked into spheres, so I just trimmed off a tiny bit for the legs to sit flat on the cake turntable (I also used the turntable to serve the cake on).
Step Three: Add the Legs
On either a cake turntable, board, or cake plate, flip the cake upside down so it is sitting on the flat side. Next, place the three legs in a triangle, rounded sides down.
Then carefully set the cake on top, centered over the legs. This can take a few tries until you get it as evenly balanced as possible. Once you are happy with the positioning, using either black candy melt or frosting, add a dab to the top of each sphere to act as glue. Then place the cake on top of the legs. Once attached, chill for a few minutes to set.

Step Four: Add Crumb Coat
Next, spread a thin layer of black frosting on the cake and the three smaller pieces to lock in crumbs. Chill for at least 20 minutes to allow it to set.
Step Four: Make the Magic Happen
Now for the fun part, that spooky cauldron finish! Add a thicker coat of black frosting, to both the cake and legs, then warm your knife in hot water, dry it off, and gently smooth the frosting. This creates a subtle shine that looks just like cast iron. Do not worry about it being perfect; you want it to look rough!
For the aged, “rusting” vibe, further rough up parts of the frosting with your spatula. Let little bits of cake peek through, so it looks like worn or rusted metal. Add extra frosting dabs without smoothing them out to make the cracked texture pop.

Step Five: Add the Potion
Spread bright green frosting across the top of the cake and let it spill down the sides like bubbling slime. Messy = magical here! Sprinkle on green pearls or candies in groupings to look like fizzing potion bubbles.
Step Five: Add the Eyeball (Because… Obviously)
Next, add candy bones, bugs, and anything else you want to add to your witch’s brew. Now add a gummy eyeball right on top — trust me, it makes the look. And for the finish, give it a light dusting of green edible glitter.

Your creation is complete!

Creepy Halloween Cauldron Cake
This Halloween Cauldron Cake bubbles over with green goo, candy bones, and spooky-cute magic! With its cracked black frosting and bubbling neon potion, this creepy-cute cake is the perfect party centerpiece — and it’s easier than you think to brew up.
Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus box ingredients) This should also leave you enough for the three legs
- Black frosting
- Green frosting, or white frosting tinted with green gel color
- 1 gummy eyeball candy
- Green candy pearls
- Bone or bug sprinkles
- Green edible glitter (optional)
- A few black candy melts (optional, for edible “glue”)
Instructions
Step 1: Bake the Cauldron and Legs
Prepare cake mix as directed. Fill one-half of a ball pan for the cauldron body and three medium half-sphere molds for the legs. Bake until done, noting the smaller pieces finish first. Cool completely.
Step 2: Trim and Level
Use a serrated knife to trim the tops so each piece has a flat surface to sit on.
Step 3: Assemble the Cauldron
Arrange the three leg domes in a triangle, rounded sides down. The cake will be carefully flipped upside down and set on the three legs. This will take some trial and error. Once you are happy with the positioning, add either a dab of black frosting or black candy melts as glue to anchor the pieces together. Chill for a few minutes to set.
Step 4: Crumb Coat
Spread a thin layer of black frosting over the body and legs to trap crumbs. Chill for 20 minutes.
Step 5: Frost the Cauldron
Add a thick coat of black frosting. Smooth lightly with a warm knife for a cast-iron shine, then rough up a few spots for that cracked, aged look.
Step 6: Add the Potion
Spread green frosting across the top, letting it drip down the sides like bubbling slime.
Step 7: Decorate the Top
Add cgroups of candy pearls for bubbles, followed by candy bones, bugs, and whatever else you want to add to your brew. Finish with a gummy eyeball on top and a sprinkle of green glitter for that final witchy touch.
