These Ladybug Appetizers come together in just a few simple steps. You’ll start by prepping the avocado spread and cheese shapes, then assemble your ladybugs and flowers for the cutest garden party plate ever.

Step 1: Make the avocado spread
– Scoop half of a ripe avocado into a bowl and mash it with a fork.
– Add the lemon juice and a pinch of salt, then mix until smooth and creamy.

Step 2: Prep the Cheese Rounds and Small Flowers
– Next, use a round cutter to cut out 9 circles of the semi-hard cheese to match the size of your crackers.
– Use the leftover cheese scraps to cut and design small flowers for decorating the plate later. Be creative with the shapes!

Step 3: Create the Larger Daisies
– Place a cheese circle on top of a Ritz cracker, then top with a second cracker to create a little sandwich base.
– Slice mini mozzarella balls into petal shapes then arrange the mozzarella petals on top of the cracker sandwich to form a daisy.
– Use a slice of red grape for the center of the flower.

– Next spread the avocado mixture over the top cracker.
– Cut cocktail tomatoes in half and place them cut-side down onto the avocado
– Lightly brush the tomato with olive oil and add some black sesame seeds for the ladybug spots.
– Place half a black olive at the front for the ladybug’s head

– Decorate the plate with fresh fresh mint, basil, or thyme leaves around the edges to create a “summer garden” vibe.
– Serve right away or chill for up to 30 minutes before serving.

And there you have a bright little edible garden scene that’s almost too cute to eat!

Tips & Tricks for Perfect Ladybug Appetizers

🐞 Build just before serving. You can prep the toppings ahead, but assemble last minute so the crackers stay crisp.

🍅 Keep the ladybug spots in place. If the oil doesn’t work, a tiny dab of avocado spread works like glue for your black sesame seed spots. No sliding bug spots here!

🌿 Use cocktail tomatoes for bigger ladybugs, and cherry tomatoes for smaller ones. It’s a simple way to change the look depending on your plate size or how dramatic you want your ladybugs to be!

Swaps and Variations

Try using mini rice cakes or toasted baguette slices instead of Ritz crackers for a different base (or to go gluten-free).
Not a fan of avocado? Herbed cream cheese, hummus, or even pesto makes a tasty substitute.
If you’re out of cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes work just as well—and sliced black grapes are a fun option for the head, too.
No mozzarella? Use feta crumbles, goat cheese, or thinly sliced cheddar shaped into flowers for an extra pop of color.
No black sesame seeds? Tiny bits of finely chopped olive or even poppy seeds can work in a pinch.
